Noah Kahan and Gracie Abrams Get Morbid on Gruesome Love Song ‘Everywhere, Everything’
It’s seventh grade, the day of the final English exam, and Noah Kahan and Gracie Abrams have spent all semester singing and playing guitar and piano when they should have been studying, letting that copy of Romeo and Juliet collect dust in the backs of their lockers. “We got this,” they’ve been telling themselves, “we know most of the songs in West Side Story.” Then, when Mrs. Harris demands an essay about what love in the play means, Kahan panics, flips to the end of the book (and only the end of the book), and automatically writes the folky, morbid “Everywhere, Everything,” his latest single, which is now a duet with Abrams and arrives a day before he makes his Saturday Night Live debut tomorrow.
At least that has to be the only plausible explanation for lyrics like, “I wanna love you ’til we’re food for the worms to eat, ’til our fingers decompose, keep my hands in yours” (which someone actually earnestly annotated on Genius). And it explains a line like, “Two bodies riddled with scars from our pre-teens intertwine in a car’s dirty backseat,” as if they’re completely unaware of the emotional scars that lie ahead in life (which Romeo and Juliet missed out on.) But what stands out most about the song is the sweetness of the shared saturnalia of sadness and devotion that both singers espouse as they talk about a love that survives past the grave as if it’s no big deal. “Would we survive in a horror movie?” Kahan asks early on in the song. Probably! (Tune in to SNL to see host Emma Stone’s reaction to the lyrics if Kahan plays it.)
Of course, Kahan and Abrams take the matter much more seriously since they recorded this new rendition of Kahan’s song off last year’s Stick Season album. The recording is part of a collaboration series he’s calling Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) — a title that’s all the more ominous after reading “Everywhere, Everything” — that has featured pairings with Kacey Musgraves, Lizzy McAlpine, Hozier, and Post Malone.
Regarding the latest song, Kahan said in a statement: “Gracie puts her whole heart into every song she writes and note she sings, and I found myself completely swept into her world the first time I heard her. So incredibly excited for you all to hear her incredible take on ‘Everywhere, Everything.'”
“I’m so honored that Noah asked me to join him on ‘Everywhere, Everything,'” Abrams said in a statement. “I’m constantly in awe of the heart and sincerity behind each of his songs, and I feel crazy lucky for the opportunity to sing on one of my favorites. Noah really is the best, and I am simply a fan.”
All of Kahan’s fans will be able to see him next year when he embarks on an ambitious world tour he’s calling the We’ll All Be Here Forever Tour, with North American dates kicking off in March. Mt. Joy will open for him at his Fenway Park gigs in Boston.
